The Lakeshore Canadiens posted back-to-back wins to open the first-ever Schmalz Cup tournament over the weekend.
The PJHL’s Jr. C champion is being decided for the first time ever in a round-robin tournament that opened with games being played in the home arenas of the four PJHL Conference champions and will culminate with a round-robin event at the University of Guelph next weekend.
In addition to the Canadiens, other teams competing in the Schmalz Cup tournament are the Clarington Eagles, Grimsby Peach Kings and Stayner Siskins.
On Saturday the Canadiens (1-0) received third period goals from Bryce Scarlett, Dylan Weston and Marco Sladoje to come from behind and defeat the Peach Kings (0-1) at the Grimsby Peach King Centre. Jarome Myers opened the scoring in the game to give Grimsby a 1-0 lead after forty minutes of play before scored Maxime Pleau scored the second and last goal of the game for the home team team in the third frame. Trevor Heslop made 20 saves to pick up the win in net for Lakeshore while Riley Eberhart made 30 stops at the other end.
Sunday afternoon the Canadiens (2-0) were paced offensively by team captain Weston who scored once and added two assists while Trevor LaRue, Scarlett, Sladoje and Sebastien Tronchin all added single markers in a 5-1 win over the Stayner Siskins (1-1) at the Atlas Tube Centre. Paul O’Doherty had the only goal for the Siskins while Romano Liburdi made 25 saves for Lakeshore. Cameron Hansen had 30 stops for the visitors.
The Canadiens return to action when they play the Clarington Eagles Thursday (May 12) at the University of Guelph.
The Schmalz Cup championship game will be played next Sunday (May 15) at the University of Guelph.
