Windsor-Essex Health Unit issues cold weather warning

By: Matt Weingarden, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, Lakeshore News Reporter

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has issued a Cold Warning for Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025, following Environment and Climate Change Canada’s forecast. A Cold Warning is issued when the temperature reaches -15°C (5°F) without the wind chill for an entire day.

Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, Medical Officer of Health, issued the warning based on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s forecast. A Cold Warning is triggered when temperatures are low enough to pose significant risks to health.

The health unit emphasizes that cold weather poses a risk to everyone, but particularly to older adults, infants, young children, outdoor workers, individuals with pre-existing conditions like heart disease, and those experiencing homelessness. Cold exposure can lead to serious health risks, including hypothermia and frostbite. Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissue freeze, causing permanent damage, while hypothermia happens when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, confusion, and uncoordinated movements. Immediate medical attention is essential if these symptoms occur.

Cold temperatures can increase the risk of cold-related injuries, including frostbite and hypothermia. Vulnerable groups include older adults, infants, young children, outdoor workers, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, and people experiencing homelessness.

If hypothermia is suspected, seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.

How to stay safe

The WECHU offers the following tips to reduce the risk of cold-related injuries:

Monitor weather forecasts and updates regularly.

Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and wear wind-resistant outerwear, a hat, mittens, and a scarf.

Remove outer layers if sweating to stay dry.

Stay active to maintain body heat.

Seek shelter or limit time outdoors during significant wind chill.

Drink warm fluids and avoid alcohol, which can give a false sense of warmth.

Ensure home heating systems are functioning and seal any drafts.

Keep your vehicle maintained and stock an emergency kit.

Check on neighbours and family members, especially those at higher risk.
