It was “Hockey Night in Essex” as local Ontario Provincial Police and former National Hockey League greats laced up the skates in the 4th annual charity hockey event.

The 2024 NHL Alumni Benefit Tour featuring NHL legends from Stanley Cup winning teams, classic original six teams and local former NHLers clashed at the Essex Centre Sports Complex in support of Special Olympics Ontario and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“It was a great day,” said Jim Chauvin, who help organize the event. “Although we didn’t get the numbers (of fans) we were hoping for we still managed to raise funds through corporate sponsorship and those who participated did their own fundraising.” He speculates that the recent postal strike had an effect on ticket sales. Chauvin estimates that around 200 fans attended the event and approximately $10,000 was raised.

The NHL Alumni Tour has previously hosted hockey legends such as, Wendel Clark, Curtis Joseph, Tiger Williams and Theo Fleury – and gives fans a unique experience, showcasing hockey skill, on ice pranks and old-fashioned hockey nostalgia. Zack Kassian was one of the local alumni who took part, as well as Eddie Mio.

This great afternoon of hockey provided something for fans of all ages and offer an exciting opportunity to see a lighter side of these hockey greats while raising money for a great cause.

“As part of our jobs as law enforcement officials engaging and helping within the community is important,” said Chauvin.

He says working with Special Olympic athletes is special to him on a personal level and has been involved since 2000.

“We have around 120 athletes locally in this area and we like to help support them through various activities throughout the year,” he added.

The NHL Alumni Benefit Tour supports the Special Olympics and Law Enforcement Torch Run’s mission “To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
