The expropriation process of land to accommodate the expansion of the Malden Rd. corridor has been authorized by LaSalle Town Council, after a breakdown of early negotiations with property owners.

“The reason for the expropriation is to widen Malden Rd. and add a third turn lane, bike lanes and sidewalks for pedestrian safety. Approximately 10 feet on each side of Malden Rd. will be required,” said Dale Langlois, director of finance for the Town of LaSalle.

According to a report received by council, 11 property owners were approached with appraisals in an effort to speed up the process, however negotiations were unsuccessful.

“Approximately 60 properties will be involved in phase 1 and those residents affected will receive a registered letter from the town giving them 30 days to request a hearing if they object to the expropriation.

“The cost will be determined through the formal 3rd party appraisal process and at this point it’s too early to provide a total cost at this point in the process,” added Langlois.

The 2009 Malden Road Environmental Assessment (EA) and 2021 Malden Road EA Addendum Study that showed the land is necessary for the town to acquire the lands to accommodate growth along the corridor and the town.

“After expropriation, utilities should be relocated in 2025 with major civil works commencing in 2026 for phase 1 – From Normandy St. to Rosati Dr.”  added Langlois.
