Early registration is underway for the 16th Annual Detroit River Walleye Classic until April 1st, which will take place at LaSalle Landing May 3rd.

The annual fishing derby, the Detroit River Walleye Classic, is open to the public and hosted by the LaSalle Firefighters Association. The event takes place the first Saturday of May each year at the boat ramp.

“This is an important event for us to give back to the community,” said Josh Tousignant, a LaSalle firefighter who is helping organize this year’s event. “For us as firefighters assisting the community is our job.”

All the proceeds raised from the tournament are returned to the community by supporting local high school scholarships, supporting local families in need, supporting children with critical illnesses, sponsoring youth programs as well as organizing local food and toy drives, and numerous other charitable support initiatives.

The kid’s derby will take place behind the Riverdance parking lot, around the boat launch, and is free for kids ages three through 13.

“This tournament continues to grow and were getting participants from across Ontario and the U.S.” he said.

Tousignant says that there are usually between 350 and 450 anglers of all ages that participate.

“We want to thank all of our sponsors, and the participants,” he added.  “We couldn’t do this without them.”
