Sandwich Secondary’s student-athletes capped off an impressive March with standout performances in swimming, wrestling, and hockey at regional and provincial competitions.
In swimming, the Sabres excelled at SWOSSAA, earning multiple podium finishes and qualifying four athletes and the boys open relay team for OFSAA, Ontario’s top high school meet.
Liam Reeves captured first place in the butterfly, while Rhys Walda earned gold in both the butterfly and individual medley. The Sabres collected several other top-three finishes.
At OFSAA, the team continued its success. Walda placed seventh in the backstroke and 11th in the medley. The boys relay team finished 16th, Reeves placed 17th, Rafe Gibson finished 20th, and Stephen Paftali set a personal best.
In wrestling, four Sabres medaled at SWOSSAA, with Oden Smith capturing gold. Jorden Strickland and Zayd Abdelrazzaq earned silver, and Landon Howlett took bronze. Smith, Strickland, and Abdelrazzaq advanced to OFSAA, where Abdelrazzaq impressed with a fourth-place finish.
“Their performances were nothing short of inspiring,” wrestling coach Ms. Kornacki said. “They’ve made our school proud.”
In girls hockey, the Sabres reached the WECSSAA final after shutting out Holy Names 3-0 in the semifinals. However, the team fell 5-2 to rival Villanova in the championship game, despite goals from Kiley Couture and Carissa Hann, who scored twice.
The boys hockey team reached the WECSSAA semifinals after defeating St. Joseph in the quarterfinals. The Sabres battled hard but fell 4-3 to St. Anne.
Both hockey teams look ahead to next season with optimism.
