Lakeshore council members, municipal staff and residents recently took part in a Neighbourhood Safety and Crime Prevention Walk through downtown Belle River. The event, held Tuesday, June 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., was hosted by the Municipality of Lakeshore in collaboration with the Windsor-Essex Regional Community Safety and Well-Being Plan and the Ontario Provincial Police – West Region.

The walk began with opening remarks at the Lakeview Park South parking lot before participants completed a 2-kilometre loop through the downtown core. Leading the walk was Chris Ciliska of the OPP, who shared practical crime prevention strategies tailored to real-life scenarios. Local officials, including Lakeshore Fire and Essex County OPP, were on hand to answer questions and lead open discussions about personal safety and community awareness.

“Feelings of safety and well-being are a critical part of building strong communities. This event is a great way for our residents to learn proactive ways to stay safe in a supportive setting,” said Mayor Tracy Bailey.

Participants were encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather, as the event proceeded rain or shine. The walk fostered open dialogue between law enforcement, municipal leaders and residents, promoting a shared commitment to safer neighbourhoods.

Events like this reflect Lakeshore’s ongoing dedication to public education and community partnerships. Organizers hope to continue offering similar initiatives to empower citizens and strengthen local connections.
