The third annual Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Rubber Duck Race took place at Lakeview Park in Belle River.

Five thousand numbered rubber ducks splashed into the water, racing to be the first to float across the finish line.

The family-friendly event was well attended. Thanks to support from the Lakeshore Fire Department, the “duck drop” was a sight to see.

“We were very grateful to be asked back by the municipality, Belle River BIA and Lakeshore Fire,” said Katharen Bortolin, executive director of Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. “The Belle River Marina is the perfect body of water to make this event happen.”

Tickets corresponding to the numbered ducks were sold for $20. The first duck to cross the finish line won $20,000. Second place received $500, while third place took home $250.

All proceeds from the event support care for Hospice patients and families across Windsor and Essex County.

“We are so excited to announce this family-friendly event that not only brings our community together, but supports our patients and families along the way,” Bortolin said. “With only partial government funding, it’s through the generous support of our volunteers and community that we continue to provide memorable care, meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones.”

Bortolin said that while the event is fun-filled, it also raises awareness about Hospice services.

“If this event provides an opportunity for families to talk about the service we provide, as well as a fundraising opportunity, all around, the Town of Belle River and its residents have been very welcoming every year,” she said.

Andrea Dyrkacz, a volunteer with Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, spent her career providing palliative care.

“What’s so wonderful about volunteering at Hospice events is that you’re giving people the opportunity to give back to the organization that has touched so many in the Windsor–Essex County area,” Dyrkacz said. “Not to mention, it’s a wonderful family event.”

Founded in 1979 to provide compassionate, clinical end-of-life care, Hospice of Windsor and Essex County offers equitable access to care for all. It provides specialized wraparound services to adults, children, families and caregivers in the setting of their choice — whether in residences or at home.
