On Sunday, Sept. 7, Lakeshore residents are invited to gather in honour of the 200th anniversary of the St. Simon & St. Jude Cemetery, as the parish celebrates two centuries of faith, community and remembrance.
An outdoor Mass will begin at 11 a.m., officiated by Mgr. Ronald P. Fabbro, CBS, Bishop of London. The ceremony will take place at the cemetery grounds located at 1731 County Rd. 42 in Belle River.
Established in 1825, the cemetery is one of the oldest in the region. The original site, located at 1730 Hwy. 42, served as a modest country burial ground for early settlers and parishioners. As the community grew, a second location was developed directly across the southern grounds to accommodate future generations.
Over the years, the cemetery has evolved into a peaceful and well-maintained space, offering quiet reflection along the riverbank and serving as a place of comfort for families and visitors. Its transformation reflects the enduring commitment of the parish to honour those who came before and to preserve sacred spaces for those yet to come.
In recognition of the milestone, the Parish Council recently installed a commemorative park bench to honour the legacy of deceased members. The bench serves as a symbol of gratitude and remembrance, inviting visitors to pause and reflect on the lives and stories woven into the fabric of the community.
“The cemetery is more than just a resting place — it’s a living testament to the faith and resilience of our parish,” said Theresa Cullen, a longtime parishioner and member of the anniversary planning committee. “This celebration is about remembering our roots and looking ahead with hope.”
The beautification of the cemetery remains an ongoing priority, with future plans including enhanced landscaping, updated signage and improved accessibility. Parish leaders say the vision is to create a space that continues to serve both spiritual and communal needs.
Following the Mass, a reception will be held at the church hall, where attendees can enjoy refreshments, share memories and view historical displays chronicling the cemetery’s evolution. All are welcome to attend.
Guests are encouraged to bring a chair and umbrella, as the ceremony will proceed rain or shine.
