It is always a unique opportunity to be rewarded for your hard work, and some of the Sandwich Sabres student athletes were granted their wish. To cap off the season, the Sabres hosted their annual athletic banquet, with select awards being given out to deserving athletes, with overall and individual sports awards alike.
The most prestigous award was male and female athlete of the year, with multi-sport athletes Ashton Maluske and Brook Ward earning Male/Female Senior Athlete of the Year, respectively. Meanwhile, for the juniors, Ryan Perrone and Marina Veselinovic deservedly took home the Male/Female Junior Athlete of the Year. Perrone, who also earned Field MVP (in large part due to his silver medal in shot put at OFSAA), discussed with the LaSalle Post how much these awards meant to him, saying
“It was special to me because I put so much work into this year and always set goals for myself. I would be lying if I said it was easy, but I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t do it all over again.”
Meanwhile, there were plenty of other awards handed out, with Male/Female Student Athlete going to Alex Gin/Leah Shannon, the Unsung Hero Awards being won by Oliver Ross and Meredith Reynolds, Most Dedicated Male being earned by Brodie Renaud, and Co-Dedicated female by Ella Steel-Douglas/Jaela Bailey and the Leadership Awards going to Ansue Kromah and Breslynn Banks, respectively.
Another major development from the night was the name change of a long-standing award, with the Track MVP being switched to the Ella Steel-Douglas Award, due to her impressive accomplishments throughout her high school career.
The final award category of the night was dedicated to recognizing the phenomenal coaches of the season, given to four teachers who volunteered their time to coach multiple sports throughout the season.
Awards were given to Ms. Bondy (Senior Boys Soccer/Ultimate Frisbee), Ms. Seagris (Cross Country/Track & Field), Mr. Mongeau (Girls Hockey, Boys Baseball), and Mr. Trudell (Football, Girls Softball). Not only were these four coaches heavily involved with the season, there were plenty of others as well, whether they be from outside of the school, or teachers, who deserve appreciation for all that they have done over the course of the year.
With plenty of Sabres taking their next step in their athletic career post-graduation and many athletes stepping up to be the newest leaders, this was a great way to wrap-up the eventful, OFSAA winning season for the Sabres. They look forward to next year, with plenty of teams looking to compete to keep their spot at the top, or take the leap going into next season.
