LaSalle council has approved building 10 pickleball courts, washrooms, and parking at the Vollmer Complex, following a presentation from association president Silvio Civitarese at a packed meeting in council chambers on Sept. 9th.

He highlighted the facility as a community statement valuing health and growth, noting the association generated about $ 30,000 yearly from court rentals, expecting growth through regional tournaments.

Council then discussed the project, with concern predominantly revolving around the nearly $ 3- million price tag, which was previously approved in the 2025 budget. An estimate of $ 2. 8 million for construction was provided.

Council heard they were unsuccessful in obtaining grants for the project.

LaSalle mayor Crystal Meloche emphasized that grants shouldn’t delay projects and supported proceeding with design, tendering, and potential phased construction, especially for parking.

“Let’ s move forward and get the design work done. We can put it out to tender, and if it comes in above budget, we can do what we did with LaSalle Landing- pull it out. Maybe that means the washrooms won’ t get built. For parking, I can’ t say no- we already have an issue there, so parking needs to move forward,” she explained.

The project was unanimously approved.

Administration expects to issue the tender late this year, aiming for construction in early spring 2026 and completion by July.

Pickleball, a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has gained popularity among people of all ages. The new courts are expected to accommodate both casual players and organized leagues, providing a dedicated space for enthusiasts to enjoy the game.
