Kyle Bleau’s goal with just over five and a half minutes remaining in the second period stood up as the eventual game winner as the Essex 73s defeated the Lakeshore Canadiens 2-1 before 1020 spectators at the Atlas Tube in Lakeshore Sunday night.

The win gives the 73s a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division final series.

Luke Sherk opened the scoring in the game for the 73s in the first period before Trevor Larue scored for the Canadiens on a powerplay in the second frame to knot the game at 1-1 and set the stage for Bleau’s eventual game-winner later that period. The teams played a scoreless tight-checking third period.

Jakob Knowles made 32 saves to pick up the win in goal for the 73s while Trevor Heslop made stops at the other end of the ice for Lakeshore. The Canadiens pulled Heslop with late in the third period in favour of an extra attacker – but were unable to score the game equalizer.

The series continues with game four at the Essex Centre Complex on Tues., April 12 before the teams return to the Atlas Tube Centre on Thurs., April 14. Both games start at 7 p.m.
