The Liberal candidate for the riding of Essex is connecting with voters on the doorstep with her party’s vision of a reduced work week and expanded greenspace, increased opportunities and decreased taxes for small business, and a growing economy that works for everyone.
“I’ve knocked on thousands of doors and the people of Essex are frustrated with the way the Ford government has responded to this pandemic, and, in particular, the negative impact these decisions have had on workers,” said Manpreet Brar. “People want a government that is focused on expanding the economy by investing in the workers who are its backbone and its heart.”
Brar said a Liberal government would replace the minimum wage with a regional living wage starting at $16, ban underpaid gig and contract work, provide all workers with portable drug, dental and mental health services, provide 10 paid sick days for all Ontario workers and match up to $1,000 in annual retirement savings for low-income earners.
“The Ontario Liberal Plan for Economic Dignity is built upon a respect for workers and the realization that workers and small business are the twin engines that drive our economy,” said Brar. “A Liberal government would put more money in the pockets of Ontario’s workers so that they can fuel our post-pandemic recovery, and we would provide small business with the tools they need to thrive.”
An Ontario Liberal government would also launch a four-day work week demonstration to see if the program is as successful here as it has been in other jurisdictions.
“We learned during the pandemic about the importance of work-life balance and mental wellness,” said Brar. “It only makes sense to leverage the lessons learned during the pandemic and explore the potential of maximizing productivity with a four-day work week.”
The other thing we learned during the pandemic was just how precious our shared outdoor spaces are for mental and physical wellness, said Brar, noting the increased popularity of parks and pathways over the past two years.
“The Liberal government will expand our protected areas and provincial parks and will invite Ontario residents to nominate the location of five new provincial parks,” said Brar. “We will also plant 800 million trees over the next eight years and give every Ontario family access to trees to plant at home so we can create a greener, more sustainable future.”
Brar is tireless community advocate and volunteer who has been working as an Information Technology Professional for a Fortune 500 company for the past 24 years. She is also a mentorship coordinator for Detroit Public Schools at the Michigan Science Centre.
Brar has lived in LaSalle with her husband of 27 years since 1996. The couple has two children.
Her father served in the Indian army and belonged to a farmer’s family. Her mother was a housewife who also managed farms. Together, they instilled in their daughter a passion for diversity, equity, inclusivity, and community service – values championed by the Liberal Party of Ontario.
