Congratulations to the Lakeshore Lightning Girls U15B Girls hockey team for pulling off the gold medal win at the Mississauga Hurricanes Winter Classic Tournament held November 26 and 27.
The team battled hard from the very first game beating the home team Mississauga Hurricanes 1-0, with the only goal scored by Sam Tucker – a shot over the shoulder of the goaltender.
The Lightning winning streak continued with a 2-1 win against the Walkerton Capitals.
Abbey Graham opened the scoring and Sophia Pellerito with the game winning goal from the blue line. It was a hard-fought win, but the girls would see the Capitals again.
The determined girls then pulled off a 5-2 win against the Bradford Ice Cats, a complete game from start to finish for the Lightning.
The win over the Ice Cats brought the ladies closer to the finals. Goal scorers in the victory were Sam Tucker, Kali Dimitrievski, Abbey Graham, Marisol Goncalves and Sienna Beaulieu.
The Lightning dropped the next game, a character building loss, as their previous victories clinched them a spot in the Tournament final, where they faced the Walkerton Capitals.
In a very tight game, the Lakeshore Lightning prevailed with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon with a shutout by MVP Brooke Brunet. The only goal in the contest, a beautiful tip in by Kali Dimitireivski, coupled with strong defensive play and goaltending secured the gold medal for the Lightning.
The girls look to continue their winning ways in January at the Sarnia Silver Stick Tournament.
Go Lightning!
