The Stoney Point Library has officially reopened its doors following a ribbon cutting this past weekend. Library officials along with members of Lakeshore council attended the event at the temporary location located at 850 Comber Side Rd. North.

The return to service after a long closure and change of location will feature free public internet access and an updated collection of books for all ages.

“This community has been very patiently waiting for us to resume regular service. We hear from residents who are excited to see the Library reopening in their area on a weekly basis” said chief Librarian Adam Craig.

At just under 1,000 square feet, the fully-accessible facility was approved by Lakeshore Council in December of 2021 as a temporary home for the library until a permanent solution could be found.

“As a resident of a small community, we recognize and embrace how important libraries are to communities. It’s a hub to gather for children and seniors,” said Ward 6 councillor Lisa Vogler.

The previous Stoney Point Branch was closed to the public in early 2020 with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The event reminds us of the importance of libraries as community treasures,” said Lakeshore mayor Tracey Bailey. “The library building is not only a time-honoured place to read and learn about the world we live in, but it is also an important cultural space where people gather to share and participate in their community. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible today.”

Library board chair Joe Bachetti attended the opening and ribbon cutting.

“We wanted to make sure that the residents of Stoney Point/ Point-aux-Roches. Its tucked away at a beautiful location next to the park,” said Bachetti. “As a Library Board, we are very happy to support the re-opening of the Stoney Point Branch so the community can once again have a gathering place and utilize all the new resources that have been added.”

This project is one of many improvements being implemented at several Lakeshore library locations.

“This is part of a larger plan to bring the Essex County Library back up to it’s pre-pandemic levels of service”, added Craig. “Next up is re-opening the Ruthven and Cottam branches, as well as the move to a new home for the Comber branch”.
