BRDHS Gives Back for Hunger

By Aisha Zafar

Belle River District High School’s Halloween for Hunger Can Drive raised over 10,000 cans and $4347 from both students and local businesses for the food pantry at the Lakeshore Community Support Centre over the month of October.

The class that collected the most donations was Mr. Neufeld’s grade 10 science class, whose student, Anya Sampson, brought in over 700 cans. Students had individual and class incentives for bringing in donations including “buy-backs” for the annual Metler Cup dodgeball tournament.

This was the 18th annual Metler Cup, seeing classes play against each other, leaving one class victorious from each grade. These four winning grades then go on to battle each other. In the end, the winning class was Ms. Kassian’s grade 12 class.

For raising the most cans, Mr. Neufeld’s class were rewarded with playing the final game of dodgeball against the teacher’s team.

Ms. Kassian, whose leadership class was tasked with organizing and running the event, said, “The Metler Cup would not be possible without the Master of Ceremonies Mr. Hlady! [He] is always so willing to help with the refereeing and overseeing the large gym so that the event runs very smoothly. [The food pantry] has benefited greatly from the generosity of our staff and students. These goods will help to feed many members of our community for the upcoming holiday season.”

BRDHS thanks the following community donors for their generosity: Tim Hortons Belle River, Belle River Optometry, Quinn Roofing, Tim Campbell & Associates (Century 21), and Suco Windows.

Overall, the Halloween for Hunger Can Drive and Metler Cup at BRDHS were a great achievement and BRDHS thanks all the staff, students, and community members who made them so successful.
