The Lakeshore Council received a report outlining a new initiative to potentially name streets in the community after local veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I and World War II.
Throughout 2024, Lakeshore staff collaborated with the Belle River and Comber branches of the Royal Canadian Legion to compile a list of area veterans killed in action. The names of these veterans will be integrated into the town’s Street Naming Policy.
Currently, developers are able to suggest names for new streets, which are then reviewed and approved based on the requirements outlined in the policy. Going forward, the pre-approved list of local veterans’ names will be available for developers to consider when naming new streets.
“With Remembrance Day upon us, this is another opportunity to honour the sacrifices made by veterans and recognize their impact on our country and communities,” said Mayor Bailey. “We greatly appreciate the support of the local Legion branches and look forward to continuing to build the list of names to honour Lakeshore veterans.”
