Lakeshore dignitaries that included mayor Tracey Bailey and deputy mayor Kirk Walsteadt and Lakeshore councillors were able to join so many residents across the three Municipality of Lakeshore Remembrance Day Services this year, with events taking place in Woodslee, Belle River and Comber over the last week. Anthony Leardi – MPP Essex and Chris Lewis – MP Essex brought messages from the provincial and federal governments.
A parade, which started at the Belle River Legion, was held on Saturday November 9th to honour veterans and made its way to the cenotaph. The previous weekend services were held at the Millen Community Centre in Woodslee.
“This day offers a reminder of our shared history. When individuals from all walks of life, answer the call to defend peace and democracy. Their contributions have not just shaped our nation, but also our communities. These stories of sacrifice and resilience are woven into the fabric of our communities,” said mayor Bailey at the Comber service.
The Comber service brought tribute, that included the reading of ” In Flanders Fields” by Joan Atkinson, and “We Shall Keep the Faith” by Centennial Central School students.
“There was also a special fly over of planes that reminded me of standing on the military base so many times as the planes came and went,” added Bailey, who was brought up in a military family.
“Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice. We will remember you.”
