It’s a well-known fact that social isolation is the number one public enemy for seniors. And, to combat that isolation LaSalle is getting a new Senior Active Living Centre.

The announcement made by Anthony Leardi, MPP for the riding of Essex, is part of the 100 new Senior Active Living Centre programs opening across the province this year to help improve seniors’ quality of life and build community engagement. LaSalle has now been included in the ‘designation’ and able to qualify for up to $55,000 in funding on a yearly basis.

“The LaSalle Senior Active Living will be a great addition for our seniors,” said Leardi, “It will offer seniors from the entire community the opportunity to stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected through various activities.”

Senior Active Living Centres keep our seniors fit, active, healthy, socially connected, in their communities and close to their homes. SALC programs offer seniors and older adults learning opportunities such as financial management and elder abuse prevention and a variety of recreational and social activities including fitness, healthy lifestyle and wellness classes that are important supports in communities.

“We sincerely thank the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility for supporting our services to expand activities for seniors in LaSalle. This aligns with our goal to provide more opportunities for seniors to stay connected and improve their overall well-being,” said Crysal Meloche, mayor of the town of LaSalle. “The funding will allow us to offer most activities at little or no cost making it easier for seniors to benefit from these programs.”

Meloche says that currently there are two locations that offer senior’s programming – Town Hall and The Vollmer Complex. With the new event centre of Front Rd, a third location to offer programming will also be available. Programs are expected to start in April.
