Belle River District High School (BRDHS) recently held the premiere of Matilda Jr., the musical directed by Melinda Lewsaw.

The first show, held on Friday, February 7, was attended by around 700 students from Lakeshore Discovery and Centennial Central.

BRDHS students also had the opportunity to see the performance through a raffle. Many students enjoyed the experience so much that they returned for later showings, either in the evening or over the weekend.

The public debut took place during BRDHS’s annual Arts Night, where students’ artwork and photography were displayed, and music students performed. The 7 p.m. show drew a large crowd of families and friends, who supported the production.

The audience was captivated as each scene unfolded, with the actors delivering a stunning performance. The auditorium was filled with joy and excitement, and the show received rave reviews. The final two performances took place the following day, February 8.

The production’s success was also due to the efforts of the backstage, technical, and makeup crew. Director Lewsaw expressed her pride in the cast and crew, saying, “I am so proud of the incredible amount of hard work our students put in to help bring this heart-warming production to life! It was a demanding show, but I feel our students really stepped up to the challenge and brought their A-game!”

Sam Brady, who played Agatha Trunchbull, shared their thoughts on the experience: “Participating in the play is always such a pleasure! It creates such a unique space where people from all grades can become friends and form bonds with each other.”

Jaxon Crow, who played the Escapologist, said, “Every day was an amazing experience. The people are so kind and inviting. We’re more than just a cast, we’re a fun and amazing family.”

Ava McLean, who played the lead role of Matilda, summed up the experience, saying, “The musical is always the highlight of my year! The friends, experiences, and memories I’ve made are ones I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.”
