LaSalle’s Gil Maure Park once again became the hub for anglers and families this May as the 16th Annual Detroit River Walleye Classic took place on the first Saturday of the month. Hosted by the LaSalle Firefighters Association, this popular fishing tournament has grown into a celebrated community tradition that draws participants of all ages to the LaSalle boat ramp.
The event kicked off early with the much-anticipated Kids’ Derby held behind the Riverdance parking lot, adjacent to the Gil Maure Park boat launch. Open to children ages three to 13, the derby offers young fishing enthusiasts a chance to cast their lines in a friendly, supervised setting — fostering a love for outdoor activity and community spirit.
Beyond the fun and competition, the Detroit River Walleye Classic serves a greater purpose. All proceeds from the tournament are reinvested back into the LaSalle community. The LaSalle Firefighters Association uses funds raised to provide scholarships to local high school students, support families facing hardship, assist children with critical illnesses, and sponsor a variety of youth programs.
Additionally, the organization coordinates food and toy drives during the holiday season and contributes to numerous other charitable initiatives throughout the year, underscoring their commitment to making a positive impact beyond firefighting duties.
Participants and spectators alike praised the event for its family-friendly atmosphere and its role in strengthening community ties. The Walleye Classic not only celebrates the natural beauty and fishing heritage of the Detroit River but also showcases the generosity and resilience of LaSalle’s residents.
This year’s tournament saw a strong turnout despite variable weather conditions, with anglers competing for top honors in various categories including largest walleye caught. Winners took home trophies and prizes donated by local businesses, further highlighting the collaborative spirit between community organizations and local enterprises.
As the LaSalle Firefighters Association prepares for next year’s event, they encourage everyone interested in fishing, community support, or simply a day outdoors to join the tradition.
