Epilepsy Southwestern Ontario (ESWO) invites residents across the county to join in celebration on Saturday, September 20th for the 9th annual ‘Seize the Day’ fundraiser at Vollmer Recreation Park in LaSalle.
This family-friendly event kicks off at 10 a.m., with a spirited run or an uplifting walk followed by a BBQ celebration. Whether running or walking to honor a loved one, standing with those affected by epilepsy, or to raise awareness, everyone is invited to be part of this inspiring day.
All funds raised will directly support vital programs and services for individuals living with epilepsy, their families, and communities across Southwestern Ontario.
Joining in the celebration is LaSalle resident David Marton – an Epilepsy Influencer. He uses his experiences as an epileptic to raise awareness and understanding of the disorder. Marton was born with a form of epilepsy known as Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare, non-hereditary neurological condition characterized by a port-wine birthmark upon his face. People born with this affliction generally have this birthmark near their eye or forehead and suffer from neurological issues like seizures.
As a child, Marton was often bullied due to his birthmark by classmates.
“Back in grade school, Kindergarten to Gr. 8, I had to live with epilepsy and my disability, and part of that was my red port-wine stain on my face, which I was very insecure about,” he explains. “I felt neglected by a lot of people, and I thought to myself, ‘I’ll never love, I’ll never get to experience life like everyone else because I’m ugly and no one will want me.”
But he refused to give up and live in isolation and self-pity.
Marton found a life-changing story on YouTube about a man named Nick, who was born without arms and legs. After seeing and hearing Nick’s story and learning how he deals with day-to-day challenges and living life on life’s terms, Marton was inspired to help others.
“I might not be able to drive, but I can ride a bike. I own my own Christian DJ service and in that I find my joy,” he added.
So, if some has Epilepsy and you are struggling – always remember there is always a plan B.”
Marton had the opportunity to inspire many people at last Springs Seize the Day 2024, that he was asked to share his story with the United States of America Epilepsy Foundation.
“One day at a time is my advice to everyone out there who has epilepsy, or any kind of disability. Don’t always look at the things that you can’t do, look at the things that you can do and focus on that, because when you focus on the things that you can do, you will find so much joy.” Martin shares.
As an Epilepsy Influencer, Marton says that he is excited to speak about life lessons with those who have gone through what he has experienced.
“If there is anyone who needs encouragement, feel free to message me regarding epilepsy awareness at the Essex County Facebook group or my Instagram raver4jesus. And I’ll be glad to inspire anyone who needs a ‘lift me up’ or prayer.” he concluded.
Please feel free to come visit Marton, hear his story, and learn more about epilepsy on Saturday, September 20th. For more information on Epilepsy, please visit Epilepsy Southwestern Ontario’s website at www.EpilepsySWO.ca.
