Lakeshore unveils accessible kayak and canoe launch at West Beach

Lakeshore has officially unveiled a new kayak and canoe launch that promises to enhance the recreational experience for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Lakeshore’s first accessible kayak launch, located at Lakeview Park–West Beach, is designed to provide easy access to the scenic waterways that define the community.

“This launch is more than just an infrastructure project — it’s an investment in inclusion and accessibility,” said Tracey Bailey, mayor of Lakeshore. “It ensures that residents and visitors, regardless of ability, can enjoy our incredible waterfront and explore the natural beauty of the Belle River.”

Since opening last month, the launch has been a success. Paddlers from across the region are enjoying the water and exploring Belle River, while supporting local restaurants and businesses.

The project, which has been 10 years in the making, marks a significant step forward in promoting eco-friendly recreational activities in the region. Local officials, including members of town council and representatives from community organizations, gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch’s completion on Aug. 21.

The new kayak and canoe launch is not just an addition to the waterfront — it symbolizes Belle River’s commitment to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and fostering community connection through outdoor recreation.

The launch features a sturdy, user-friendly design, allowing paddlers of all skill levels to safely enter and exit the water. It consists of a floating dock with two platforms designed to support users of all abilities in accessing canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. The system is part of the EZ Dock brand and includes the floating dock, EZ Launch One Way, EZ Launch Residential, and a transfer slide with bench and grab rail.

The total cost of the project was $100,000, which included the floating platform, launches, ramp, signage and break wall improvements.

“This project is a shining example of how we find success by working together and listening to the expertise of our residents,” Bailey added, recognizing the long-time advocacy of Belle River resident and paddler John Enright.

Enright, a member of the Windsor-Essex County Canoe Club, has been advocating for the launch for several years. He believes the new addition will change how the river, beach and lake are used.

“It really is going to give people who maybe just need that little bit of a confidence boost to launch from the perfect spot,” he said. “The nice thing is, you get a day like today — it’s perfectly located. This wouldn’t be the ideal day to be out on the lake, but you have the immediate option of the river.”

Enright hopes other communities in the region will implement similar systems, potentially creating a continuous paddling link across the area.

Residents have expressed enthusiasm about the new launch, noting that it offers exciting opportunities for family-friendly outings and outdoor adventures.

Launch users and park visitors are encouraged to share feedback on how Lakeshore can improve amenities like the accessible canoe and kayak launch.

Paddlers are also reminded to follow marine safety guidelines and carry the required safety equipment while on the water. For more information on safe boating, visit Transport Canada’s Boating Safety page.
