The Belle River District High School cooperative education program provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the working environment and field they may wish to pursue in the future.
Students can be placed in settings ranging from auto shops and bakeries to elementary schools and dental clinics, among many others. They have the option to undertake one, two, three, or four credit co-op placements depending on their interests and future career goals.
For students interested in a future working in skilled trades, BRDHS offers the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) in enhanced precision metal cutting. Through OYAP, students attend classes while also earning money working on job sites—gaining both education and practical experience.
This year, over 100 students are enrolled in co-op programs. Besides visiting co-op placements during school hours, students can also participate in options during the summer or after school. Students enrolled in a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in fields like arts and culture, manufacturing, business, and others, require at least two co-op credits to earn this designation on their high school diploma.
This year’s co-op teachers at BRDHS are Ms. D. Garvey and Mr. F. Graziano . Ms. Garvey said, “Co-op is all about empowering students to learn, lead, and give back through real-world experience.”
Nobles and future Nobles are encouraged to explore Co-op and OYAP opportunities to discover programs that can enhance their resumes and help them identify potential career paths after high school.
