Community members, local officials, and veterans gathered at the Libro Community Centre cenotaph on November 2nd for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony, organized by the Woodslee Millen Group. The event served as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by Canada’s armed forces and the enduring importance of remembrance in Lakeshore and across Essex County.
The ceremony opened with remarks from Essex MP Chris Lewis, who reflected on the bravery of those who left home to defend freedom. “In perilous times, they left the comforts of home and country to fight for our freedom,” Lewis said. “In these unprecedented times, we pause to remember their sacrifice. Our role pales in comparison. We gather today, as we have in the past, to honour those who gave so much.”
Local dignitaries including Lakeshore mayor Tracey Bailey and Deputy Mayor Kirk Walstedt along with were in attendance. He emphasized the need to remember veterans: “Our commitment to honouring our Veterans ensures future generations understand the cost of our nation’s peace and security. To our Veterans and their families, thank you.”
Mayor Bailey echoed these sentiments, urging the community to reflect on the meaning of the day. “Your sacrifice, your service, and your love of country continue to inspire all of us to be better citizens and stronger communities. With our busy lives, it is easy to overlook the significance of Remembrance Day, but it remains vital that we pause and reflect on the dedication of those who have selflessly served our nation,” Bailey said.
“Remembrance Day, along with ceremonies like these, also remind us of our collective responsibility of preserving the principles and values that make up the fabric of our nation. Today, we remember those who have upheld these values around the world; on battlefields and at home. We thank you for your service. We thank you for your sacrifice. We will remember you.”
